Failing to Stop at a Red Traffic Light is an offence under Rule 56 of the Road Rules 2014 (NSW) which carries 3 demerit points and a fine or a fine of up to $2,200 if dealt with in court after which the RMS will apply 3 demerit points unless you are able to achieve a section 10 dismissal or a conditional release order without a conviction.
The offence is committed where a driver at or approaching a red traffic light fails to stop before the stop line, or if there is no stop line, fails to stop before the nearest or only traffic light.
Rule 57 states that it is also an offence to fail to stop before a yellow traffic light if the driver can safely stop before the stop line, or if there is no stop line, can safely stop before the traffic lights.
The penalties are the same as failing to stop at a red light.
